Police: Man accused of starting levee fire in West Sacramento

A man has been arrested on suspicion of starting a levee fire near Sherwood Harbor Marina in West Sacramento, police say.

On the afternoon of May 11th, West Sac PD officers and fire personnel responded to the scene of the fire, where witnesses reported seeing a man — later identified as 47-year-old Shawanah Nailah Haynes — run away on foot and flee in a vehicle.

A Sacramento PD air unit soon spotted the vehicle and directed officers to its location, at which point a traffic stop was conducted.

Officers searched the vehicle and reportedly found eight Molotov Cocktails, as well as other items used to make incendiary devices. The Yolo County Bomb Squad also responded to the scene to take possession of the items after they were deemed safe to handle.

Haynes was arrested and booked on suspicion of arson, possession of a destructive device in a vehicle, and possession of items to manufacture a destructive device.
