“On December 13, 2020, at about 9:00AM, Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Correctional Deputies found an unresponsive male inmate lying in his bed. The on-site medical staff began life-saving measures and additional emergency medical personnel responded to the jail. After unsuccessful attempts to revive him, Alan Gene Gibson Jr., age 47 of Happy Camp, California, was pronounced deceased at the jail. SCSO Detectives responded to the jail and began an investigation.

On December 16, 2020, as part of the ongoing investigation, a forensic autopsy was conducted on Mr. Gibson. Even though the preliminary investigation did not show obvious signs of foul play, the forensic autopsy revealed Mr. Gibson’s cause of death was homicide due to strangulation. SCSO Detectives identified Brenan McCovey, age 22, of Orleans, California, as the one responsible for Mr. Gibson’s death.

On October 16, 2020, Brenan McCovey was booked at the Siskiyou County Jail for vehicle theft and obstructing and resisting arrest. Mr. McCovey remains in-custody on additional charges of murder.

This is an ongoing investigation, and more information will be released as it becomes available. If anyone has any information related to this homicide, please contact the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office at (530) 841-2900.”
