ONTARIO -An officer involved shooting in Ontario resulted in the death of woman and a dog.

Shortly after 2:00 PM on Thursday, May 30st, 2019, police responded to a scene where a woman was threatening to take her own life. Officers located the woman, who was armed with a machete and a handgun, in the backyard of a home in the 400 block of West Maple Street in Ontario.

One of her male family members attempted unsuccessfully to disarm her. When police became concerned that she might harm the man as the two struggled over the firearm, an officer and a police K-9 entered the yard.

A large dog, also in the backyard, attacked the police K-9. “Officers were forced to shoot the dog,” the release read. The woman, who was now armed with a metal pipe as well as the handgun, began approaching officers. She refused to drop her weapons as she continued toward them, and an officer involved shooting took place.

Within two minutes, the Ontario fire department responded to the scene to administer medical aid to the woman. She was transported to a local hospital and, unfortunately, died as a result of her injuries.

“The female’s identity will be withheld till the corner provides proper notification,” the release read.

Police recovered a handgun, metal pipe, and machete at the scene.

No officers were harmed in this situation. The K-9 was treated by a veterinarian and will recover.
