SAN LEANDRO — Two men in custody are suspected of robbing a jewelry store last month, and then assaulting a security guard. Security camera recordings of the crimes helped law enforcement locate and arrest both suspects.

Authorities arrested the suspects separately on consecutive days last week. They face charges of robbing Sam’s Jewelry Store on July 24, at Bayfair Center shopping mall. The exact address is 15555 East 14th Street.

The robbery occurred at about 6:30 p.m. First, the two suspects entered the store and inquired about expensive jewelry and then left, only to return a short time later.

Upon their return, one man stood outside the store. The second man now wearing gloves smashed glass display cases with a hammer, and he grabbed handfuls of jewelry. Altogether, the pair stole an estimated $14,000 worth of jewelry.

Before the robbers fled, one threw a hammer at a security guard, injuring him in the face. Store security cameras recorded evidence, and partially recorded the license of the getaway car in the parking lot.

San Leandro detectives credit the video recordings and collaboration with a nearby police agency for helping solve the case. It helped them to identify two Oakland residents as suspects.

“This is an example of how video surveillance and collaboration with partner law enforcement come together to solve a violent crime,” said San Leandro police Lt. Isaac Benabou in a prepared statement.

On August 7, the first suspect nabbed, 35-year-old Steven Glenn gave a full confession, according to San Leandro detectives. Glenn’s arrest was followed by the arrest of 41-year-old Randy L. Hawkins on August 8.

Both suspects remain housed at Santa Rita Jail. Each man faces assault and robbery charges. Bail for Glenn is $205,000 and $95,000 for Hawkins.
