FRESNO – One of Fresno’s most wanted suspects is now in custody. 21-year old Lawrence Chiles’s had alist of charges against him. First of all, his involvement in a 2017 shooting and active participation in a street gang gained FPD’s attention. He also has felony charges for assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm.
Law enforcement spotted Chiles riding passenger in a vehicle near Barstow and West Avenues on June 5 at 8:15 pm. Members of the Multi Agency Gang Enforcement Consortium were not going to let him slip through their fingers.
The CHP Central Division Air Operations Unit (H-40) and FPD’s K-9 Unit were also in the area collaborating on a proactive operation.
Charles Packard, the driver, refused to pull over when officers signaled him to do so and the chase was on. Police had eyes in the sky from the beginning, with the
CHP Air Unit H-40 already in the area.
Officers on the ground received up to date info on every movement of the suspects’ car. As a result this gravely limited their chances to evade.
The car chase halted near the 400 block of East Garland Ave, about three miles from where it began.
Officers set up a perimeter as all four vehicle occupants fled on foot. The suspect hopped fences and sought shelter in the backyards of the neighboring houses. H-40 continued to alert officers to the location of the suspects as it became available.
The Special Response Team joined the search party. Officers of all units involved cleared yard by yard until all four men were in custody. Chiles, whose sighting kicked off this chase, was the last to be captured.
Police discovered a loaded Glock handgun and a high capacity magazine inside the shed.
21-year old Malik Fields and 19-year old Elijah Fields, the other two passengers in the vehicle, face acharge of resisting arrest.
The driver, 25-year old Charles Packard, will have to answer for evading police, a felony charge due to his current status as a parolee, and for violating the conditions of his parole. Lastly, this evasion attempt will add more charges to Chiles’ arrest record.
The individuals all either have ties to the Northside street gang or are active members or associates.
