MENDOCINO — On Sunday afternoon, a deputy conducted a routine traffic stop in the 76000 block of Highway 162.

It wasn’t long before the deputy noticed a hunting rifle in the vehicle, and soon thereafter identified 53-year-old John Pennell Nelson as one of the passengers of the vehicle.

Nelson, an ex-felon, was arrested on site.  A further search revealed that Nelson had drug paraphernalia and two grams of meth in his possession.

In addition, Nelson was under the influence of a controlled substance as he was being arrested. His bail has been set at $25,000.
