SAUSALITO – A motorist crashed and was arrested on Labor Day, minutes after leading local police officers and a Marin County Sheriff’s deputy on a car chase through Sausalito, Mill Valley, and Freeway 101.

A Sausalito police officer attempted to stop a driver suspected of speeding on Bridgeway shortly before noon on September 4, but instead of pulling over the recalcitrant driver sped away.

The officer pursued the suspect Aaron L. Long, 45 of San Rafael, who allegedly slammed on the brakes and abruptly made a U-turn, maneuvers perceived as threatening, to ram into the police car.

More Sausalito officers pursued the fleeing suspect but temporarily lost sight of the driver. A nearby Marin County Sheriff’s deputy spotted the vehicle and joined the chase.

The suspect drove on to southbound Freeway 101, careened off at the Shoreline Highway (Route 1) exit, looped under the freeway, sideswiped a vehicle at the Pohono Street Park and Ride Lot at 100 Shoreline Highway and then crashed on the side of the road.

Sausalito officers detained and later arrested Long. His passenger, a 33-year-old woman from Nevada, was questioned and released without any charges.

Police found hypodermic needles and a substance suspected of being methamphetamine inside the Toyota Celica that Long had been driving.

Long was taken to Marin General Hospital and he was checked out without any injuries, before being transported to Marin County Jail. He was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, evading a police officer with disregard for safety, possession of a controlled substance, reckless driving, and driving with a suspended license.
