WATSONVILLE — While on patrol, two police officers happened to notice a man driving in the area who was wanted on outstanding warrants for theft.

By the end of the night, 24-year-old Jesus Salgado Magana found himself in custody on charges of being a prohibited person in possession of an illegal assault rifle, possession of a controlled substance, and the outstanding warrants.

The officers were on patrol in the area of Green Valley Road when they noticed Magana driving along. Due to his outstanding warrants, a stop was conducted, at which point Magana was taken into custody and the vehicle searched.

Officers discovered a usable amount of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and a short barrel rifle loaded with high capacity magazines.

Magana is now housed at the Santa Cruz County Jail.
