BENICIA — At around 9:35 AM, police received a report of two suspicious individuals peeking into car windows in the parking lot of the Southampton Shopping Center.

As officers arrived, they saw two men leave the lot in a gold Honda Sedan and promptly hit the gas as they entered westbound I-70. A short chase ensued, but was called off after officers lost sight of the car and feared for the safety of other motorists.

Nonetheless, it was only 15 minutes later that another officer on a service call spotted the vehicle driving along Military West & First. A stop was attempted and another chase began, albeit ending with the driver losing control and spinning off the road on the 700 block of Military West.

As police converged on the scene, the vehicle’s passenger was detained and the driver — later identified as 26-year-old Tyrell Washington of Vallejo, fled and jumped a nearby fence. He was quickly found hiding in a neighbor’s yard and arrested.

Washington is now housed at the Solano County Jail for felony evasion, two counts of reckless driving, and driving on a suspended license. It is worth noting that no stolen items were found in the vehicle.

Washington’s passenger was interviewed and later released.

Based on the official Benicia Police Department press release.
