SANTA CRUZ — Police have announced the arrest of 43-year-old Kasey Gaskell, who fled to Missouri after the murder of his mother, 66-year-old Shannon Magner. She was found dead in an apartment rented by Gaskell on Wednesday, September 26th.

On that morning, officers were notified of a deceased woman in an apartment complex in the 800 block of Front Street. It didn’t take long for detectives to determine her death to be a homicide. It was suspected that her body had been there for some time, possibly since the previous Wednesday.

Gaskell, who was listed as the current tenant of the apartment, was nowhere to be found.

An arrest warrant was issued and detectives began tracking his movements. His last known location was found to be Kansas City, and it was believed that he was traveling to the Green Bay/Greenleaf area of Wisconsin.

Police enlisted the help of the FBI and, shortly after Gaskell’s information was released to Kansas City media outlets, a call came in to the Kansas City Police Department. A person matching Gaskell’s description had been spotted at a local homeless shelter.

Kansas City Police Officers responded to the shelter and Gaskell was arrested without incident. He will be extradited back to Santa Cruz to face his charges.
