Slippery Multi-jurisdictional Suspect Caught

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY – Richard Anthony Rodriguez, a 30-year-old resident of Nipomo—just north of the Santa Barbara-San Luis Obispo county line—was finally captured on February 29th as he cruised down a neighborhood thoroughfare in Arroyo Grande.

Rodriguez was spotted by San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department patrol officers as he drove past their marked black-and-white unit just after nightfall. Rodriguez’s car was known to law enforcement and had been the subject of a search since February 17th, when it’s alleged he attempted to kill his ex-girlfriend during a two-vehicle drive-by encounter.

There were no injuries that night when Rodriguez pulled his car alongside another vehicle in which his former girlfriend was a passenger. With apparent wanton disregard for the safety of all concerned, Rodriguez fired a single shot into the female-packed car and drove away.

Since that altercation, as reported on Crimevoice.com, Rodriguez was also the subject of daylong standoff with San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Deputies, during which Rodriguez—despite armed cops surrounding the motel in which he had been hiding and throwing up a roadblock on any escape routes—managed to avoid capture.

The ensuing investigation of the premises by Special Enforcement Detail deputies and motorized robot indicated that he had, in fact, vacated the premises prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

But in the early evening hours of the 29th, when deputies pulled his car over, he was summarily taken into custody and subsequently transported to San Luis Obispo County Jail, where he was booked on suspicion of attempted murder and violation of parole, with his bail set at $500,000.
