Sacramento Man Arrested in Fatal Shooting of Woman

SACRAMENTO—A Sacramento man accused of accidentally fatally shooting a woman in the early hours on Saturday, September 19, has been arrested.

Kenyatta Brown, 22, was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail Saturday on an involuntary manslaughter charge.

At approximately 2:45 a.m. on September 19, deputies responded to a call from a residence on the 5900 block of Sutter Avenue in Carmichael. When they arrived, they found the body of an 18-year-old woman inside the apartment. She had a gunshot wound to her chest.

Following an investigation, Brown was identified as the person responsible for the shooting. The Sheriff’s Department said that Brown and the victim, Joslynn Sovenski, had no previous relationship, but were at the apartment with mutual acquaintances. It is believed that Brown has been negligent in handling the gun and accidentally fired it, mortally wounding the young woman.

The Sacramento Sheriff’s Department said that deputies requested emergency medical personnel and tried to perform lifesaving measures on Sovenski themselves until paramedics arrived. She could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Sovenski’s Facebook page, she was a recent high school graduate from Oak Ridge High in El Dorado Hills.

Brown is currently ineligible for bail.
