Wasco Mother Arrested for Locking Child in Car

WASCO — A 33-year-old Wasco mother was arrested on Thursday after leaving her toddler unattended in a locked car for around two hours.

Paula Curiel was booked into the Kern County Jail for felony child endangerment. Her bail has been set at $20,000.

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began when deputies responded to a call of a child locked in a car in the Kmart parking lot located at 2785 Highway 46, at around 2 p.m. on July 23.

When they arrived, deputies said that they discovered a two-year-old male child crying and sweating inside of the locked vehicle.

Deputies removed the child from the vehicle and immediately provided medical treatment. The mother of the child, identified as Curiel, was located nearby a short time later and arrested, while the child was taken into protective custody.
