SANTA CRUZ—The Santa Cruz Police Department needs help in identifying the driver of a grey truck, who witnesses say intentionally slammed into a Black Mercedes on 400 block of Palm Street.

On Sunday, May 17, the Santa Cruz Police Department responded to multiple reports of vehicles chasing one another in the area near Neary Lagoon Park. Shortly after that call, the dispatch center started to receive calls of a hit and run accident that occurred on the 400 block of Palm Street.

Witnesses told police that they saw a grey truck chase an older black Mercedes in the area of Bay Street and California Street. The speeding Mercedes lost control and eventually crashed into the curb on Palm Street.

The chasing truck, which was also following at a high-rate of speed, rear-ended the Mercedes. After hitting the Mercedes, witnesses stated that the driver of the truck then backed up, and witnesses described the truck as intentionally slamming into the victim’s car again. Both drivers were heard yelling at each other in the street.

After intentionally ramming the victim’s vehicle, the suspected truck backed up and fled the area heading westbound on Palm Street.  The truck had significant front end damage. The victim in the Mercedes was transported to Dominican Hospital with a compound fracture to his leg.

The suspect vehicle is described as light grey full size pickup truck. The suspect driver is described as being a white male in his 40s.

Santa Cruz Police is asking anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact them at 831-420-5820.
