Exeter High School Teacher Arrested for Allegedly Molesting Student

VISALIA – Police arrested a high school teacher who allegedly molested an underage student last year in his home.

Matthew Varpness, 36, is accused of molesting the high school girl in April 2014. Visalia police said that Varpness also sent sexually explicit text messages and photos to the victim and to another underage high school girl. Police believe Varpness sent the girls messages throughout most of last year.

Varpness was arrested on the campus of Exeter High School on Friday on suspicion of child molestation and annoying a minor.

Varpness is an English and computer programming teacher at the high school, where he has worked for the last five years. Since August, he has also been teaching drama and computer programming at Wilson Middle School, according to Exeter Unified School District.

Police do not know if there are additional victims. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the Visalia Police Department at (559) 734-8117.
