Yolo County Sheriff Arrests 2 Shooting Suspects

Two suspects are reportedly in custody that are believed to be involved in the shooting of a Yolo man last week, according to an official press release issued by the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office.

Maximiliano Salas, 49, was reportedly arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He is currently in custody in the Monroe Detention Center with a bail of $170,000. And Janet Joy Garcia, 49, was reportedly arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm with criminal enhancements, and transported to the Monroe Detention Center. She is being held with a bail of $1,090,000. The high bail is reportedly primarily due to the enhancements for previous offenses.

According to Yolo County Sheriff, on Thursday, January 15, at about 4 pm, deputies responded to a dispatch call of a man being shot outside a fifth wheel trailer on County Road 16A, north of the unincorporated town of Yolo. Upon arrival, deputies found a man outside who had been shot one time in the lower abdomen. The victim reportedly identified the shooter as Salas, who was near the victim at the scene. The victim was transported to the hospital by ambulance.

Witnesses reportedly told deputies they saw Salas’ girlfriend, Garcia — who lives with Salas — run through a field and away from the incident right before deputies arrived. Deputies could not find a weapon at the scene, and it was believed Garcia may have taken it with her when she fled. A search of the area by deputies did not find Garcia. However, they did find a rifle in a field behind the residence that deputies believed to be the weapon used in the shooting.

During the on-scene investigation, deputies reportedly determined that Salas was the person who had shot the victim, which lead to his arrest. Then on the morning of Friday, January 16, deputies reportedly found Garcia at the trailer. Upon further investigation, Garcia was also arrested.

According to Yolo County Sheriff, the motive for the shooting remains unclear at this time. The victim and Salas were reportedly friends, however both appeared to be extremely intoxicated at the time of the shooting.

Anyone with additional information regarding this case is asked to call Yolo County Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Hernan Oviedo at 530-668-5212.
