Jury Convicts Woodland Man For Assaulting His Girlfriend In Davis

A resident of Woodland, 36, has been convicted in Yolo Superior Court on assault and weapons charges.

The incident took place at a Davis Apartment complex, Yolo County District Attorney Jeff Reisig announced in a press release earlier this week. Police arrested Sergio Chavez on July 22, 2013, one day after he fired a semi-automatic gun at his girlfriend during an argument at the Chestnut Place Apartments on East Eighth Street. Chavez, in the heat of the argument, missed. The bullet lodged safely in a wall and he fled.

Trial in Yolo Superior Court last week resulted in Chavez being convicted on the aforementioned charges along with enhancements for being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm. Having the felonious strikes against him will add years to his sentence, Reisig said.

At Chavez’s February 13 sentencing hearing, he will face up to 35 years in state prison.
