Demetrious Ward was a popular straight-A Vacaville High School student who also played on the football and track teams. Many students in the immediate aftermath of his shooting agreed he had a way of lighting up any room he entered with “an infectious smile.” He also had the ability, rare in a teenager, of being able to put adults at ease in interactions with them.
About 1:30 am on the morning of October 6, Demetrious Ward was sitting in a pickup truck in the parking lot of the Canyon Creek Apartments at 159 Aegean Way while waiting to complete a small marijuana deal.
Vacaville Police investigators say “the victim was then approached by Alijondro Edward Jones, 20, of Vacaville.” Jones’s intention was to rob Ward of a small amount of marijuana, but during the robbery, Ward was shot in the head. He was found soon afterward and rushed to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Vacaville, where he underwent immediate emergency surgery. But he was pronounced dead at about 4:30 am that morning.
The ongoing Vacaville Police investigation soon revealed that Kai Hughes, 18, of Vacaville, arranged the marijuana buy and accompanied Ward as a passenger in his truck to the apartment complex parking lot. She provided information to Jones that assisted him in carrying out the robbery. Vacaville detectives arrested Hughes in Citrus Heights on November 3, at about 9:30 pm. She was booked into Solano County Jail for Murder (187 PC).
Now, detectives have announced their arrest of a third suspect in the case. They discovered that Aimee Sabedra, 34, helped Jones after he committed the homicide. She was arrested in North Vacaville on November 12 and booked into Solano County Jail on a charge of 32 PC, Accessory.
Jones had been arrested at the Solano County Probation Office in Fairfield, after he arrived for a scheduled visit with a probation officer. He was peaceably arrested there and charged with murder, attempted robbery and violations of his probation. Jones had been arrested previously in February on charges of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or co-habitant (domestic violence) and threats of violence.
Trial dates for the case have yet to be set.
