Ventura County – Just after midnight on July 23rd, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Emergency Dispatch received a 911 telephone call reporting a fight between two men in an unincorporated area of Ventura County north of the City of Ventura.
Responding deputies arrived at the scene in close proximity to a mobile home park in the 100 block of Holt Street to discover Devin Morris, 25, a Ventura resident suffering from multiple stab wounds. According to VCSD spokesperson Det. Julie Novak, shortly after law enforcement personnel appeared, Morris “was declared dead at the scene.”
Over the ensuing several hours, according to the report filed by VCSD Sgt. Denise Sliva, “Major Crimes Detectives conducted numerous interviews and searches.” During the following eight hours while those investigations were being conducted, Morris’ body remained where he fell nearly a full eight hours, and was not removed from the scene by the Ventura County Medical Examiner until 8:15 a.m.
The Major Crimes investigations conducted over that eight hour period proved fruitful, firmly identifying principal suspect and area resident Howard Lovett, all of 18 years of age, as being responsible for the death of Morris. Lovett was arrested later that day, and his bail was set at $500,000.
Without any further details as to motive in the killing, or what the nature of the fatal altercation between the two young men was, Novak did indicate that “the victim and the suspect apparently knew each other,” and that Detectives continue to interview those individuals who may know something about the circumstances of the deadly conflict.
