Man Arrested for Second Time in Daughter’s Death

2100 block of Park Way

BAKERSFIELD — Police arrested a Bakersfield man for the second time on Tuesday for the murder of his four-month-old daughter.

The Bakersfield Police Dept. took John Wilburn into custody and charged him with murder, felony child abuse, criminal threats and spousal abuse.

He was booked into the Kern County Jail where he is being held without bail.

According to police, four-month-old, Paige Cohen was found unresponsive at a home in the 2100 block of Park Way on June 4. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

The infant died while in the care of Wilburn, who told police he was watching his daughter and left her unattended for a short time.

According to police, Wilburn claimed that when he returned, he discovered the infant had rolled off the couch.

However, instead of immediately seeking medical aid, Wilburn waited for his girlfriend, the mother of the child, to return home.

As a result, detectives arrested Wilburn for the death of the infant, but he was released on June 1, while the Kern County District Attorney’s Office awaited the results of tests from the coroner’s office.

The autopsy revealed the cause of the death was a blunt force injury to the head.

As a result, a warrant for Wilburn’s arrest was issued on July 31.
