Man Arrested for Kidnapping, Raping Sister

PLANADA – A 48-year-old man was arrested for allegedly kidnapping and raping his much younger sister.

Apolinar Cortez

Deputies with the Merced County Sheriff’s Department say Apolinar Cortez kidnapped his 26-year-old biological sister in Los Angeles at knifepoint on Friday evening and threatened to kill her if she didn’t go along with his plans.

Cortez and an accomplice then drove the victim back to Cortez’ residence, a converted shack in the 100 block of Topeka Avenue in Planada. Cortez held his sister captive at the shack. After the other man left, Cortez proceeded to rape the woman all day on Saturday, authorities said.

When the suspect left on Sunday morning to get breakfast, the victim was able to escape and notified someone who lived nearby. Detectives were able to arrest Cortez after he left the location where he’d eaten breakfast.

Cortez confessed to the crime, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Department. They say the reason for his actions was because he was in love with his sister.

Cortez is facing multiple charges, including kidnapping, rape by force or fear, rape of a relative, incest, and false imprisonment. He could spend life in prison, authorities said. He is being held on a $1.17 million bond.

His accomplice, whose name hasn’t been released, is still at large.

Anyone who has any information is asked to contact the Merced County Sheriff’s Department.
