Arrests made in South El Monte murder

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department arrested two suspects October 31st in association with the October 18th murder of 31-year-old South El Monte resident Randy Duran. 34-year-old Fernando Olivo of South El Monte was charged with murder while his girlfriend, 27-year-old Kathryn Gilbert of Redondo Beach, was arrested for accessory to murder.

The victim was found in this South El Monte neighborhood

On October 18th, deputies from the LASD’s Temple Station responded to the 2400 block of Continental Avenue in South El Monte. There they found Olivo suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper torso. Paramedics transported Olivo to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In an interview with the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, LASD Lt. Mike Rosson said that officers served a search warrant October 29th at a location in La Puente where Olivo and Gilbert were staying.

According to Lt. Rosson, Duran had been a former resident at the complex he had been shot at, but declined to give any more details including Olivo’s motive for murdering Duran.

Some media outlets have referred to Duran as “Randy James Bonilla.” According to Lt. Margarito Robles of the LASD, the victim used both the Bonilla and Duran surnames. Olivo is currently being held without bail while Gilbert’s bail is set at $20,000.
