Barricaded Man Kills Self After Police Standoff

SANTA CRUZ—Santa Cruz Police officers responded to a report of an attack that occurred at a private residence in the 100 block of Mountain View Avenue.  Officers learned that the victim was home alone taking a nap when someone ransacking the home awakened her.

Richard Glanzman, Sr.

The victim confronted the suspect, at which point the suspect turned his attention on her and began attacking her.  The suspect, who was later identified as Richard Andrew Glanzman Sr., 55 of Santa Cruz tried to strangle her and sexually assault her.  She successfully fought off Glanzman twice during the attack.  “It is remarkable what she was able to do against him, she was able to prevent further physical harm to herself,” Santa Cruz Police Department spokesperson Zach Friends said.  “She will be treated by our Victim Services Unit.”

The victim, a 32-year-old female from the Bay Area was visiting with friends at the time of the attack.  She eventually was able to escape her attacker and get to safety.  Police learned that Glanzman lived in the neighborhood.  “Glanzman had no history of doing something like this before,” friends added.

The Santa Cruz Police contacted another resident at Glanzman’s residence and asked if he was there.  Police were able to search the interior of the home. They found a gun case and live ammunition spilled on the floor.  The officers found that he barricaded himself in a room in his residence.  Police secured the area and attempted to contact him but did not get a response.

Police evacuated about 20 homes as they tried to make contact with Glanzman.  They obtained a warrant for Glanzman’s arrest, charging him with attempted sexual assault, attempted homicide, burglary and false imprisonment with a bail amount of $1,000,000. Santa Cruz Police Department’s Emergency Services responded with a tactical team and a hostage negotiator.  After several attempts to contact him the tactical team made entry into the home.

They found Mr. Glazman deceased from a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound in an upstairs bedroom.  The weapon was recovered at the scene.
