Man allegedly pulls shotgun on stranger walking home from party in Weaverville

A man has been arrested after allegedly threatening another man with a shotgun in Weaverville earlier this week.

Around 4 AM on Sunday, January 12, Sheriff’s dispatch received a call regarding gunfire downtown. Sheriff’s deputies and CHP responded to the scene, where they found 42-year-old Julian Ascher standing near the intersection of Court Street and State Route 299.

Ascher was holding a shotgun and pointing it at another man.

Authorities say he complied when told to drop the gun, and admitted to having discharged it into the air once. He also told police he didn’t know the man he’d been pointing it at, but that the man had been behaving suspiciously.

As it turned out, the man had simply been walking home from a party. He was released from the scene.

Ascher, meanwhile, was arrested on suspicion of brandishing a firearm, discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner, disturbing the peace, false imprisonment, criminal threats, and assault with a deadly weapon.
