Hotel guest shot by man who broke up fight

SACRAMENTO — Police are looking into the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old man that began as a fight between two friends at a hotel early Wednesday morning.

At approximately 12:50 a.m., officers responded to the 1900 block of Cantebury Road on a disturbance occurring at a hotel.  Officers arrived finding a broken window in a hotel room with a 29-year-old male inside that had been shot and killed.  The subject who shot the male was detained at the scene.

Based on the preliminary investigation, detectives believe the 29-year-old had gotten intoxicated and into a fight with a friend. A neighboring hotel resident came out, broke up the fight and then headed back to his room. A short time later, detectives believe the 29-year-old came down to the room where the neighbor who intervened was staying, broke out a window and went inside.  The man was shot when he entered the neighbor’s hotel room.

The investigation is still ongoing and no arrest has been made. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending the notification of his next of kin.
