Brother Convicted in Sister’s Shooting Murder

Johnny Goins

LOS ANGELES — As is the case in many of these instances, the shooting death of 32-year-old Tanaya Goins has something of a backstory.

It seems as if her brother, 32-year-old Johnny Goins, had a girlfriend who told Tanaya that he tried to suffocate her.  The attacker blamed post-traumatic stress disorder due to violence he said he had experienced as a child.

Tanaya Goins told her brother’s girlfriend that he in fact “did not suffer any child abuse and that he should not be assaulting women,” the LA County’s DA Office reports.

Johnny Goins got wind of these statements, and on March 5, 2015, went to his sister’s apartment in San Gabriel.

He then shot through the window and the door of the apartment multiple times, hitting his sister in the head and torso and killing her. He was arrested the same day in Moreno Valley.

Goins faces sentencing on April 6 with a maximum sentence of 77 years to life.
