Prowling call leads to burglary arrest

The San Luis Obispo Police Department arrested a man early Wednesday morning who is suspected of multiple residential burglaries.

According to SLOPD, officers responded to a call around 3 a.m. regarding a prowler at a residence on Cortez Court. Police say the resident was awakened by the sound of footsteps in her back yard.

Leland admitted to burglarizing apartments on Los Osos Valley Road

Upon arrival, officers located and detained Zachery D. Leland, 23, of San Luis Obispo. According to SLOPD, Leland was wearing a backpack containing a stolen computer and textbook. Police say Leland admitted to having just committed two residential burglaries just before being detained for prowling on Cortez Court. Leland directed officers to the two apartments he had burglarized, located at 11321 Los Osos Valley Road.

According to police, both apartments he entered were unlocked and the residents were home when he went in. Police say in both cases, the residents were asleep and had no idea Leland was inside. The stolen property was returned to their rightful owners.

Leland was booked into custody at San Luis Obispo County Jail on two counts of first degree burglary of an occupied dwelling, one count of prowling and a warrant for possession of stolen property. Leland’s bail was set at $50,000.
