Deputy-Involved Shooting Under Investigation Following Aqueduct Incident in Hesperia

HESPERIA, CA — Authorities have identified the man involved in an August 15 deputy-involved shooting as 27-year-old Jesus Armando Herrera, a resident of Hesperia.

On Saturday, August 15, 2026, at approximately 9:55 a.m., deputies from the Hesperia Station responded to the area of Main Street and Escondido Avenue following reports of an adult male armed with a knife and covered in blood.

Upon arrival, deputies located the suspect, who was bleeding from a self-inflicted injury. Deputies ordered Herrera to drop the weapon, but he refused to comply and entered the nearby aqueduct. Deputies attempted to rescue him from the water using a rope, but the attempt was unsuccessful. Herrera subsequently used a nearby ladder to climb out of the aqueduct.

After exiting the aqueduct, Herrera continued to disregard commands and charged toward a deputy. A deputy-involved shooting occurred, and Herrera was struck by gunfire.

Deputies and fire department personnel provided initial medical aid at the scene. Herrera was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he remains in stable condition. No deputies or bystanders were injured during the encounter.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Specialized Investigations Division has taken over the investigation. Upon completion, detectives will submit the findings to the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office for official review.
