Mono County Sheriff’s Office Warns Community of Increase in Scam Calls

MONO COUNTY, CA — “The Mono County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to an increase in fraudulent phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to represent the **Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)** or the **Mono County Sheriff’s Office**.

Scammers often use caller ID spoofing technology to make it appear that the call is coming from a legitimate law enforcement agency. Callers may falsely claim that you have missed jury duty, have an outstanding warrant, owe fines, or must make an immediate payment to avoid arrest or other legal action.

The Mono County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI **will never** demand payment over the phone or request payment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or other unconventional payment methods to resolve legal matters.

If you receive one of these calls:

* Hang up immediately.
* Do not provide personal or financial information.
* Do not send money or purchase gift cards.
* If you are unsure whether the call is legitimate, contact the Mono County Sheriff’s Office directly using a trusted phone number—not one provided by the caller.

If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, report it to your local law enforcement agency as soon as possible. You may also report internet and financial scams to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

The Mono County Sheriff’s Office encourages everyone to share this information with family members, friends, and neighbors, especially older adults, who are often targeted by these types of scams.
