San Francisco Police Officer and Suspect Hospitalized Following Shooting in Bayview District
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — A San Francisco police officer and a robbery suspect are hospitalized with life-threatening injuries following a pursuit and an officer-involved shooting in the Bayview District late Sunday night.
The incident began on May 31, 2026, at approximately 10:29 p.m., when San Francisco Police Department officers received an alert regarding a vehicle tied to a robbery entering the city from the Bay Bridge. Officers located the vehicle, occupied by two individuals, near 5th and Folsom Streets. When officers attempted to conduct a vehicle stop near Mission and First Streets, the driver fled, initiating a vehicle pursuit through city streets.
The pursuit concluded when the suspect vehicle became disabled near Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue. Upon encountering the vehicle, the driver opened fire on responding officers, striking one officer multiple times. An officer-involved shooting occurred during the exchange.
The driver fled the scene on foot, while a passenger remaining in the vehicle sustained injuries from the gunfire. Officers at the scene transported both the wounded officer and the injured passenger to a local hospital, where both are currently receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries.
Additional responding units established a perimeter to search for the driver. Officers located the suspect near Bayshore Boulevard and Costa Street, taking him into custody without further incident. Law enforcement personnel also recovered two firearms at the scene.
The incident is undergoing a multi-agency review involving the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the SFPD Investigative Services Division, the SFPD Internal Affairs Division, and the Department of Police Accountability. In accordance with department transparency protocols, a public town hall meeting regarding the officer-involved shooting will be conducted within ten days.
