SANTA ANA, CA – A standard patrol contact escalated into an eight-hour barricade situation on Sunday, May 3, 2026, ending with the arrest of a 37-year-old suspect wanted for attempted murder.
The incident originated from an active investigation into an assault with a deadly weapon reported on January 2, 2026. In that initial case, a victim reported being physically beaten by a suspect later identified as Joseph Angel Palacios of Santa Ana.
At approximately 7:00 a.m. on May 3, Santa Ana Police Department patrol officers located Palacios at a Motel 6 establishment situated at 1501 North Harbor Boulevard. When officers initiated contact, Palacios retreated into a motel room, barricaded the entryway, and refused law enforcement commands to surrender.
Due to the suspect’s refusal to comply, the department deployed its Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team alongside Crisis Negotiators to the scene. Authorities established that an adult female was also inside the room with Palacios, and investigators determined she was participating in the standoff willingly.
Following approximately eight hours of continuous negotiations and specialized tactical operations, both Palacios and the female occupant exited the room and surrendered to officers. Palacios was taken into custody without further incident and booked into the Santa Ana Jail on an outstanding charge of attempted murder.
