Hit and Run Suspect Released from Jail – Police Searching for a Toyota Camry

BERKELEY, CA — A driver arrested on suspicion of hit and run resulting in injury has been
released from custody while police search for the suspect car.
Hector Juarez-Perez, 41, of Berkeley, was booked at Alameda County Santa Rita Jail on April 15.
The hit-and-run collision occurred on April 7 at approximately 8:10 p.m. A 28-year-old man
was struck in the crosswalk at the intersection of Adeline and Harmon streets in Berkeley. The
victim landed on the roof of the car. He was carried about 125 feet, before falling onto the
roadway.
“The driver did not stop, and left the victim with significant head and body injuries,” a
prepared statement from Berkeley police said. The man reportedly lost consciousness upon
impact, and he has no memory of the incident. He was transported to a trauma center in
Oakland.
Following a weeklong investigation Juarez-Perez was arrested at his apartment, which was
searched for evidence. Police recovered the keys to the suspect car, a black 2014 Toyota
Camry, California license plate 8GDE55. However, the whereabouts of the car remains
unknown.
Investigators identified Juarez-Perez as the suspect, based on witness statements,
surveillance video, and an automated license plate reader. Juarez-Perez is the registered
owner of the suspect car.
The Toyota Camry has a distinctive strip of tape of on the passenger side, where the rear
bumper seam meets the quarter panel. Anyone who knows the whereabouts of this car can
