YOLO, CA – On March 2, Yolo County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 17000 block of County Road 97 following reports that an adult male had attempted to lure two children, aged 8 and 10, into a remote area of a nearby property. The children declined the individual’s advances and informed their parents, who then contacted law enforcement. The individual, identified as 50-year-old Bernardo “Bennie” Sanchez of Woodland, left the scene prior to the arrival of deputies and fled toward Solano County.
An investigation into Sanchez’s background revealed an active felony arrest warrant from Solano County for lewd acts with a child under 14, which had been outstanding for eight years. Records also indicated a criminal history involving sexual offenses against minors and indecent exposure dating back to 2001. Investigators further determined that Sanchez resided on Plane Avenue in Woodland, located near an elementary school and a high school.
In the early morning of March 10, the Yolo County Regional SWAT team executed a search warrant at Sanchez’s residence in connection with child sex crimes. The timing of the operation was selected to avoid disrupting school activities. Sanchez was arrested without incident. During the search, authorities recovered a handgun and a significant amount of ammunition. Due to his legal status, Sanchez is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
Sanchez was booked into the Yolo County Jail on charges related to child sexual assault and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He is currently being held without cash bail after detectives secured a bail enhancement based on public safety considerations. The Yolo County Sheriff’s Office is requesting that any additional victims or witnesses of crimes involving Sanchez contact Detective Hernan Vega at 530-668-5280.
