Suspect Wearing an Ankle Monitor Arrested for Carjacking in Piedmont

PIEDMONT, CA — A man on parole wearing an ankle monitor allegedly committed an armed
carjacking.

Carleton Ferguson, 39, of Oakland, remains in custody ineligible for release on
bond, following his arrest on January 19.

Ferguson was apprehended following a police pursuit from Oakland to Piedmont. The same
suspect has a prior conviction for carjacking, and multiple prior arrests involving vehicle thefts.

His latest arrest involves a carjacking in Oakland by suspects armed with a rifle. Oakland
police were pursuing the stolen vehicle before it entered Piedmont, shortly after 4 a.m.
A camera checking license plates alerted Piedmont police, during a coordinated law
enforcement operation with Oakland PD. The stolen vehicle was detected as it entered
Piedmont, near the intersection of Oakland and Olive avenues.

As many as 11 police cars pursued the suspect. The driver later identified as Ferguson lost
control of the vehicle. It crashed into a gate on El Cerrito Avenue in Piedmont, which ended
the pursuit.

Following the crash, Piedmont police took Ferguson into custody, and a rifle was recovered
as evidence. After Ferguson was medically cleared at a hospital, he was transported to
Alameda County Santa Rita Jail.

Ferguson was booked on suspicion of the following charges –
· Carjacking
· Felon in possession of a firearm
· Evading an officer
· Violation of parole

Ferguson has a prior conviction for carjacking in February 2021. He has five prior arrests on
his record involving vehicle thefts, and two arrests for possession of controlled substances.
A woman passenger who was with Ferguson was detained at the crash scene, but not further
information was released concerning her status.
