One Arrested for Obstruction After Reported Gunfire Investigation in Penn Valley

PENN VALLEY, CA — The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) is continuing its investigation into reports of suspected gunfire that occurred in a residential area off of Carrie Ann Lane in Penn Valley on the evening of December 9th.

Detectives and deputies from the NCSO, alongside law enforcement partners including the Grass Valley Police Department and California Highway Patrol, responded to the area to investigate the reports. A family of four, consisting of two adult males, one adult female, and one male juvenile residing in the neighborhood, were detained for questioning in connection with the incident.

A safety sweep of the surrounding neighborhood was conducted, and no injuries or property damage were reported. The investigation revealed that the family was engaging in a celebration when the alleged gunfire took place.

Authorities located numerous shell casings along Carrie Ann Lane and Ranch Road. Additionally, an unregistered and partially disassembled firearm was discovered outside the family’s residence on their property. Following this discovery, a search warrant was obtained and executed for the residence, which resulted in the seizure of further gun parts and ammunition.

One of the adult males, identified as 38-year-old Morris Turrentine Jr. of Penn Valley, was arrested for obstructing justice after reportedly being uncooperative with the investigation. Upon booking at the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility, a second charge was added for making felony threats to correctional officers. The adult female subject was cited for narcotics and subsequently released at the scene. The remaining two subjects were released without charges.

The NCSO stated that there is currently no known threat to the neighborhood. The investigation remains active, and authorities are requesting that neighboring residents and businesses with video surveillance systems review footage from between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. for any activity related to the incident. Individuals with additional information are urged to contact the NCSO at (530) 265-7880.
