SACRAMENTO, CA – A man is in critical condition and a suspect is in custody following a drive-by shooting that occurred on Tuesday, August 12, 2025. The incident took place around 12:15 PM near the intersection of Morse Avenue and Lerwick Way.
North Division Patrol Deputies were the first to arrive on the scene after receiving a report of a shooting. They discovered an adult male with a gunshot wound to the head and immediately began providing medical assistance. The victim was then transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Following the discovery of the victim’s serious injuries, Sheriff’s Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators were dispatched to the scene. Their investigation determined that the victim was seated in the back of a vehicle when a suspect, identified as 46-year-old Jason Hankins, allegedly conducted a drive-by shooting, striking the victim in the head. This is hardly Hankins’ first brush with the law. A records search indicates that Hankins has multiple prior arrests for various offenses, including but not limited to weapons offenses, vehicle theft offenses, and dui offenses.
Detectives secured a Ramey arrest warrant for Hankins. On Wednesday, August 13, Major Crimes Bureau Detectives located and apprehended him near 2520 Northgate Blvd. Authorities reported that Hankins had attempted to conceal both his vehicle and the firearm used in the incident, but detectives were able to locate both items. Hankins has been booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on a charge of attempted murder. He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on August 15.
