Gunfire Reported at Vigil for Murdered High School Student, Suspect in Custody

CULVER CITY, CA — Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with an alleged shooting at a vigil for a high school student who had been murdered in Torrance the week before.

According to the Culver City Police Department, officers received a call reporting that shots had been fired in the area of Culver City High School on the night of Tuesday, June 24, where the vigil was being held on the school’s football field.

Officers reportedly arrived on the scene within two minutes and determined that a fight had broken out and escalated to someone firing a weapon. Police say that, so far, no injuries have been reported.

Witnesses alerted officers to the presence of a suspicious vehicle in the area. Officers pulled the vehicle over and reportedly caught the driver in illegal possession of a loaded firearm, but concluded that this individual had not been involved in the shooting.

Investigators later identified a potential suspect, whom they ultimately located in the area of 58th Street and Vermont Avenue in Los Angeles.

On the night of Wednesday, June 25, detectives surveiled the suspect, identified as a 20-year-old male, as he got into a vehicle being driven by a 17-year-old juvenile.

Detectives reportedly pulled the vehicle over on 6th Avenue and took the suspect into custody.

The suspect was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.

The investigation remains active, and police encourage anyone with information relevant to the case to contact the department Watch Commander at 310-253-6202.
