El Centro Police Respond to Burglary Call; Officer-Involved Shooting Under Investigation
EL CENTRO, CA — On May 21, 2025, officers with the El Centro Police Department responded to a call reporting a possible burglary in progress on the 200 block of South Second Street in El Centro, California. The call, received by Emergency Dispatch at approximately 8:08 p.m., described a suspicious individual who was reportedly attempting to break into a residence. The caller indicated that the subject, described as an adult male, was believed to be armed with a firearm.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers made contact with the individual in question. During the encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred. The individual was pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.
In accordance with California Assembly Bill 1506, which mandates independent investigations of officer-involved shootings resulting in the death of an unarmed civilian, the California Department of Justice has taken over the investigation. The El Centro Police Department has stated that it will cooperate fully with the Department of Justice throughout the process.
