Vehicle Pursuit Suspect Re-Arrested After Reportedly Escaping Custody in Butte County
OROVILLE, CA — “On May 18, 2025, at approximately 9:31 PM, deputies with the Butte County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), were involved in a vehicle pursuit with a motorcycle later determined to have been operated by Gavin Martinez Gonzales, age 40, of Oroville. The pursuit began in the area of Lower Wyandotte Road and Oro Garden Ranch Road in Oroville. Gonzales fled from deputies on the motorcycle before losing control of the motorcycle and laying it down in the area of Pacific Heights Road and Georgia Pacific Road. Gonzales then fled the area on foot before being located and arrested by deputies a short distance away. Gonzales was also discovered to have an active felony arrest warrant issued by the Oroville Police Department on the charges of robbery and assault with a firearm.
Due to the fact that Gonzales was involved in a vehicle collision, he was transported to Oroville Medical Center (OMC) for a medical evaluation before being transported to the Butte County Jail.
Gonzales was subsequently admitted to OMC for treatment, where he was assigned a single room. Gonzales was shackled by the ankle to the hospital bed, with a deputy sitting outside the door. On May 19, at approximately 12:30 PM, the deputy heard a crashing noise, at which point the deputy saw Gonzales jumping out of a window and fleeing across a parking lot. It was later discovered Gonzales managed to slip his foot out of the shackles. The deputy immediately reported the escape and he, along with other responding law enforcement officers, began searching for Gonzales.
At approximately 2:45 PM, Gonzales was located in the area of Ophir Road and Lincoln Blvd. in Oroville, and taken into custody without incident.
Gonzales has since been transported to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office and is now facing an additional felony charge of escape.”
