Modoc County Serial Stalker Re-Arrested Hours After Controversial Release

ALTURAS, CA — On Thursday, April 3, 2025, 40 year old Christopher Cavnar was released from custody by a Modoc County judge despite significant objections from the Modoc County District Attorney’s Office. Cavnar faces multiple ongoing legal cases with charges including three counts of felony stalking, seven counts of disobeying a domestic relations court order, and nineteen counts of making annoying telephone calls. These charges span from May 2023 to June 2024.
Cavnar had been detained since July 2024, during which time he underwent a two-month psychiatric treatment. Despite a victim’s impact statement expressing ongoing fear for their safety, he was granted supervised release starting April 4, 2025. The terms of his release include a criminal protective order, mandatory behavioral health treatment, warrantless searches for substances, and possible GPS monitoring as determined by the Modoc County Probation Department.
However, shortly after his release on April 4, Cavnar was re-arrested for breaching the terms of his release, based on complaints received by the sheriff’s office. He now faces additional charges related to violating court orders and making harassing phone calls. Currently held on $25,000 bail, Cavnar’s next court appearance is scheduled for early the following week.
District Attorney Salarno expressed grave concerns regarding Cavnar’s disregard for court orders and the safety of the victim, emphasizing the challenges in ensuring protection from Cavnar’s actions despite the legal conditions set. The situation underscores the ongoing efforts of the Modoc County District Attorney’s Office to balance legal procedures with the need for community safety and victim protection.
