AMERICAN CANYON, CA  —  On the night of October 17, 2024, American Canyon Police conducted a traffic stop on a Hyundai Elantra traveling southbound on Highway 29, near American Canyon Road, after observing multiple abrupt and unsafe lane changes. Officers, suspecting potential impairment, pulled the vehicle over shortly after 11 p.m.

Upon approaching the vehicle, officers observed smoke emanating from inside and detected a strong odor of freshly burnt marijuana. Further inspection revealed marijuana in plain sight within the car. The driver was identified as Jose Canjura, 30, and the passenger as Paul Perkins, 29, both residents of Fairfield, California.

Following a field sobriety test, officers determined that Canjura was driving under the influence. Police K-9 Brick, who was on the scene, alerted officers to possible illegal items inside the vehicle. A subsequent search led to the discovery of a loaded, unregistered Glock 43 firearm and suspected narcotics located under the passenger seat.

Both Canjura and Perkins were taken into custody and booked into county jail. They face felony charges related to the possession of an illegal firearm, with Canjura facing an additional charge for driving under the influence.
