“On Sunday, December 31, 2023, at 10:25 p.m., deputies from the Perris Sheriff’s Station responded to the 1700 block of Glenview Drive, in the city of Perris after receiving multiple reports of an assault with a deadly weapon that had just occurred.

Upon arriving at the location, the deputies located a 36-year-old Hispanic male, later identified as Leo Campos, suffering from a possible gunshot wound. First aid was administered to Campos, however, he succumbed to his injury at the location.

During the course of the investigation, David Smit, a 31-year-old resident of Perris, was identified as the suspect in the incident and was arrested without incident. Smit was later booked into the Cois Byrd Detention Center for the murder.

There are no outstanding suspects sought in this investigation. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Investigator J. Adams with the Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-1700 or Investigator R. Barbee with the Perris Police at (951) 210-1000.
