RODEO —A couple was arrested after two children were discovered suffering from prolonged abuse. A 2-year-old boy was later pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. A baby girl also in their care is expected to survive.

Tyshawn L. Haywood, 21, and Destiny R. DeBoe, 22, were each booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. Haywood and DeBoe both remain behind bars in custody in lieu of $3.1 million bond each.

On October 2nd, the couple reported that a child accidentally drowned in a bathtub. Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office deputies and paramedics were dispatched to the 300 block of California Street.

Life-saving efforts were performed at the couple’s apartment, before the 2-year-old boy was transported to a hospital. Tragically, the toddler died at the hospital. A second child, a 10- month-old girl also taken to a hospital has survived and is expected to recover.

It was subsequently determined the toddler had not perished because of drowning. Instead, investigators determined the toddler’s death resulted from prolonged abuse. Both children had bruises, and they suffered injuries to internal organs and bone fractures.

DeBoe is the children’s mother and Haywood is her boyfriend. On October 5th, Haywood and DeBoe were each charged for murder and assault on a child causing death. They are also each charged with two counts of torture.
