PIEDMONT — One suspect is in custody and a second suspect is still sought in connection with a carjacking. The carjackers allowed a young mother to retrieve her baby—before speeding away with her BMW.

The victim was putting the infant inside her BMW on the morning of September 10. At approximately 9 a.m., two men approached her. They demanded that she hand over to them her purse, keys, and her phone.

She complied and both suspects fled immediately from the 1200 block of Grand Avenue. No one was reported injured. The stolen BMW was equipped with GPS technology, making it easy to track its precise location.

Piedmont police worked with the BMW company to find the car in Oakland, which encircles upscale Piedmont. A California Highway Patrol helicopter crew monitored the car on International Boulevard in East Oakland. Oakland police assisted on the ground and Piedmont officers arrested the suspect.

The suspect is 19-year-old Quran J. Mabon, a resident of Rodeo. Mabon was apprehended on September 10 at 4:34 p.m. He was booked into Alameda County Santa Rita Jail for carjacking and possession of a stolen vehicle. Bond for release from custody was set at $110,000.

Four women with Mabon at the time of his arrest were detained before later being released. The second carjacking suspect has yet to be apprehended. Anyone with information can call the Piedmont Police Department, 510-420-3000.
