One Arrested, Police Seek Info from Public in Fatal Market & South Broadway Shooting
Police in Turlock have opened an investigation into a recent fatal shooting, according to a department media release.
Around 2 AM on Saturday, January 14th, officers responded to the area of Market and South Broadway downtown for a report of a shooting and found evidence that corroborated this report, as well as evidence that at least one person had been struck by gunfire, but no individuals remained at the scene.
Investigating officers reportedly located a grey Honda sedan with three occupants inside, two of whom had suffered gunshot wounds. The driver, identified as 22-year-old Gary Jackson, was taken into custody for alleged possession of a firearm and taken to the police department for questioning.
The other two occupants were taken to area hospitals. One of the individuals, identified as 21-year-old Romeo Portillo, ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The other, a 20-year-old male, reportedly remains in stable condition.
Police say that, while the investigation is ongoing, evidence collected thus far suggests that the shooting had been the result of an altercation at a bar and was not a random incident. Police further suspect that more than one gun had been used, and that two groups of people had been involved.
Detective-Sergeant Victor Barcelos stated in the media release that anyone with information relevant to the case is highly encouraged to contact Detective Gina Giovacchini at (209) 668-6539, or the Turlock Police Department tip line at (209) 668-5550 ext. 6780.
