Santa Cruz PD Arrests Suspect in Fatal Stabbing

A suspect in a fatal stabbing is now in custody. An investigation by the Santa Cruz Police Department led to the suspect’s arrest less than 48hrs after the murder occurred.

The stabbing occurred on November 21stnear Cedar and Church St in Santa Cruz. Officers from the Santa Cruz PD along with emergency services responded to a report of a fight. When they arrived at the scene, the victim was located on the ground with at least one visible stab wound.

The Santa Cruz PD immediately began to investigate the crime and search for the suspect. After sifting through surveillance videos they were able to make an identification of a person of interest. November 22nd a search warrant was served which led to the arrest of suspect John Frederick Burke (64).

During the search officers also located evidence to link Burke to the crime.

The victim was identified as Neoklis Koumides (36) who was homeless. CPR was administered and the victim was transported to Dominican Hospital, where he later died of his injuries. It is not yet known how the victim and suspect knew each other.

Burke is being held at the Santa Cruz County Main Jail on homicide charges.
