An active parolee has been arrested for murder after a man was fatally stabbed on a Santa Ana bike trail.

Aaron William Parks, 28, died five days after he sustained a stab wound to the head. “Detectives learned the victim was homeless and that the stabbing possibly stemmed from a dispute,” said Santa Ana police.

The suspect, Robert Rodriguez Jr., 38, was already being held at Orange County Jail in relation to another assault case when Santa Ana Homicide Detectives identified him as a suspect in the murder case. He was also found to be on active parole.

The incident occurred the afternoon of Thursday, August 11th, along the bike trail in the 2600 block of N. Broadway Avenue. Orange County Fire Authority personnel contacted Santa Ana police for assistance after finding and treating Parks for his injury. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Detectives used physical evidence at the scene to name Rodriguez as a possible suspect. He was formally charged with murder on September 26th.

“The motive for the murder appears to be a result of an unprovoked attack,” said Santa Ana police.
