A convicted felon and gang member was arrested after a man was found with a gunshot wound to the chest on a sidewalk in Santa Ana.

The suspect, a 24-year-old Edgar Martinez, was identified with the use of surveillance video that captured the incident.

The shooting took place shortly before 3:19 PM on Monday, August 15th. Police received “reports of a shooting and a male adult down on the sidewalk,” in the 1700 block of N. Spurgeon Street, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.

When officers arrived, they found the man with a gunshot wound to the chest, unresponsive. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition and eventually succumbed to his wounds. He was later identified as 20-year-old Alex Ruiz of Santa Ana.

“Homicide Detectives, the Criminal Career Unit, VICE Unit, and Gang Detectives worked tirelessly through the night on this case,” said police. “Their relentless effort led to the arrest of Martinez within 24 hours of the homicide.”

Martinez faces charges of murder, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and committing a felony for the benefit of the gang.
