“Two men were arrested the morning of August 6th after a catalytic converter theft and high-speed pursuit led to a fiery vehicle collision in Huntington Beach.

The suspects, 18-year-old Yonathan Acosta of Norwalk and 22-year-old Tyrece Sinkler of Long Beach, were booked on felony charges after being treated for minor injuries from the collision.

A Huntington Beach “graveyard” patrol officer noticed a vehicle suspiciously speeding away from a residential tract near Atlanta Avenue and Newland Street around 5:15 AM on August 6th. When the officer directed the driver to pull over, he refused and fled.

The officer pursued the vehicle as they traveled northbound on Newland Street. The vehicle ran a red light at the Adam Avenue intersection and subsequently crashed into another vehicle.

“The suspects’ vehicle caught fire and quickly became fully engulfed,” said Huntington Beach police. “The driver and passenger were quickly taken into custody by responding officers and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the uninvolved vehicle also sustained minor injuries.”

Several catalytic converters that had been recently cut, one saw, and multiple used and new blades were found in the suspects’ vehicle.

No further information on this case has yet been released.”
