Sheriff’s Office: Intoxicated man allegedly throws newspaper stand through café window

A Mendocino County man was recently arrested after allegedly throwing a newspaper stand through a café window while drunk.

Just before 3 a.m. on June 22, deputies responded to the Blue Bird Café on Highway 101 in Hopland to investigate reports of an intoxicated man vandalizing property.

Responding deputies made contact with a man standing across the street from the café, identified as 71-year-old Mark Pivec, who reportedly showed clear signs of drunkenness and had a severe cut on his hand that was still bleeding, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies also investigated the scene at the café; the front display window had been smashed, a newspaper stand was halfway inside the business, and a rear door to the building — which led to apartments upstairs — had also been smashed.

Deputies then noted blood on the display window and the stand, as well as mustard squirted all over one of the vehicles outside, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Ultimately, Pivec was taken into custody and, after being treated and medically cleared, booked on suspicion of felony vandalism and public intoxication.
